HUD's Office of Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes (OLHCHH) provides funds to state and local governments to develop cost-effective ways to reduce lead-based paint hazards. In addition, the office enforces HUD's lead-based paint regulations, provides public outreach and technical assistance, and conducts technical studies to help protect children and their families from health and safety hazards in the home.
As the nation's housing agency, HUD is committed to promoting decent, affordable housing and addressing housing conditions that threaten the health of residents. Unfortunately, there are still too many homes in the U.S. with hazards that endanger the health and safety of occupants. The cost of housing-related health hazards to the U.S. measures in the tens of billions annually. HUD taken action to address these issues by unveiling a Healthy Homes Strategic Plan.
In 1999, HUD recognized that targeting building deficiencies that contribute to a multitude of health and safety hazards was more cost-effective than implementing interventions on a hazard-by-hazard basis and proposed a healthy homes program, situated in the Office of Healthy Homes and Lead Hazard Control. Today, HUD's commitment to providing safe and healthy homes for all families and children takes another significant step forward with the publication of the Healthy Homes Strategic Plan.
